How do you tell a true morel from a false morel?
A true morel is hollow from the tip of the cap through the stem when you cut it lengthwise. False morels often have wrinkled or lobed caps and an interior that is chambered, cottony, or folded instead of cleanly hollow. That is the most reliable beginner-level separation. Because several false morels contain dangerous toxins or cause serious illness, the correct habit is to cut every spring morel candidate open rather than trusting the outer shape by itself.
